AP liquor shops: Government allocates 335 shops to Geeta workers
In a significant move, the Andhra Pradesh government has issued a notification for the allocation of 335 liquor shops to workers from the Geeta castes. This decision aligns with the state’s two-year liquor policy (2024-26) and is aimed at empowering marginalized communities by promoting economic development.
Key Details of the Allocation
Policy Overview: The allocation of liquor shops to Geeta workers is part of the government’s efforts to fulfill an election promise. A GO has been issued, inviting district-wise applications for the shops. Licenses will be granted through a lottery system under the supervision of district collectors.
Eligibility and Application: Applicants must submit valid caste and nativity certificates. A non-refundable application fee applies.
Empowerment Goals: The initiative seeks to support Geeta workers, including communities such as Yata Gowda, Ediga, Gowda (Gamala), Kalali, Srisayana (Segidi), and Shettibalija, who traditionally practice the Kallu Geeta profession.
Population-Based Allocation: Liquor shops will be distributed based on the population ratio of the Geeta castes as determined by the 2016 Smart Pulse Survey.
Exclusions: Scheduled Castes in Scheduled Areas are not eligible for shop allocations. Additionally, each individual will be permitted to hold only one license.
The Andhra Pradesh government’s decision underscores its commitment to economic upliftment and social equity, providing opportunities for the Geeta communities to improve their livelihoods.
