AP Liquor Policy
The government has delivered some good news for liquor lovers in Andhra Pradesh. With the coalition government now in place, there are efforts to address the issues faced under the previous administration, particularly regarding the high prices of inferior-quality liquor. The government is working to reintroduce popular old brands and offer them at reduced prices.
Additionally, a significant decision was made recently in response to public criticism regarding the lack of price reductions on alcoholic beverages since the government change. Following the introduction of a new excise system, liquor shops have been allocated to private individuals via a lottery system. However, complaints have surfaced about these vendors charging prices above the Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
In light of these issues, the government has intensified its crackdown on establishments selling liquor at inflated prices. A notification has been issued imposing hefty fines for violations involving illegal liquor sales. Specifically, if prices exceed the MRP, offenders will face a fine of ₹500,000. Furthermore, if the same infraction occurs a second time, the liquor shop's license will be revoked.
The order also states that operating belt shops within the premises of a licensed liquor shop is prohibited, and similar penalties will apply for such offenses. This notification has been issued under Section 47(1) of the AP Excise Act, and similar provisions will also apply to bar licenses.
This proactive approach aims to ensure fair pricing and regulate the liquor market effectively in Andhra Pradesh.
