Andhra Pradesh Launches Seaplane Service Trial to Boost Tourism and Connectivity
Vijayawada/Kurnool: The stage is set for the trial run of a new seaplane service between Vijayawada and Srisailam, scheduled for Saturday. On Friday, a demonstration was conducted at Prakasam Barrage, overseen by Infrastructure and Investment (I&I) Department Secretary S. Suresh, along with APADCL Managing Director Praveen Adhithya and other officials.
The trial marks a pivotal step in Andhra Pradesh’s efforts to boost connectivity and promote tourism to scenic and historically significant locations. Partnering with the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited (APADCL), the government aims to make seaplanes a feasible alternative to conventional air travel by utilizing the State's extensive waterways and coastal areas.
The inaugural flight, operated with a De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited seaplane, will include Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, underscoring the significance of this venture as part of the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), a Central initiative under Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN), designed to expand transportation to underserved regions.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has designated Prakasam Barrage as a primary seaplane site, with eight additional scenic destinations under consideration, including Araku, Lambasingi, Rushikonda, Kakinada, Konaseema, Srisailam, and Tirupati. These locations, chosen for their cultural and natural appeal, are expected to enhance travel experiences and attract both domestic and international tourists.
"Seaplanes provide a unique travel option, especially for regions without traditional airport facilities," said Secretary Suresh. Unlike standard airports, water aerodromes require minimal infrastructure and quicker construction times, making them efficient and cost-effective for regional connectivity. Each seaplane will carry up to 19 passengers, with initial assessments focused on route viability, water depth, and proximity to tourist hubs. The government will determine passenger fares after a feasibility study, with full service anticipated within three months. The initiative will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to keep travel affordable. APADCL is also exploring additional water aerodrome sites to expand access to remote areas statewide.
In tandem with the seaplane project, Srisaila Devasthanam officials have launched initiatives to enhance Srisailam’s appeal as a destination for both tourists and devotees. Temple Executive Officer E. Chandrasekhar Reddy expressed pride in hosting the seaplane trial, highlighting its historic significance for Srisailam and potential for growth.
“This initiative opens a new dimension for tourism in Andhra Pradesh, offering a unique travel experience and connecting beautiful destinations,” said Secretary Suresh. “We believe this can significantly drive regional development by improving accessibility and drawing more visitors.”
Beyond tourism, the seaplane service is projected to have a positive economic impact by creating jobs in aviation and related sectors, contributing to industrial growth, and strengthening the State’s economy. With increased passenger traffic, the initiative is positioned to drive local development.
Through this pioneering project, Andhra Pradesh is advancing towards an integrated transport ecosystem that supports economic growth, promotes tourism, and highlights the State’s commitment to modern infrastructure solutions. By expanding travel options, the government envisions a more accessible and connected AP, positioning it as a premier tourism destination in India.
