Amid PM Modi's outreach to church, Sangh Parivar’s complex relationship with Christians
In a significant move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) during their Christmas celebration event at its headquarters in Delhi on Monday. This marked the first time a Prime Minister has participated in such an event, highlighting the BJP's strategic outreach to the Christian community.
During his speech, Modi condemned the recent attack on a Christmas market in Germany and the 2019 Easter bombings in Sri Lanka. He also emphasized the alignment of his slogan, “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” with Christian teachings. "The Bible says, carry each others’ burdens. Jesus Christ has shown the world the example of mercy and unconditional service. We celebrate Christmas because we can imbibe these values into our lives," Modi stated.
This outreach is seen as part of the BJP's broader strategy, with party insiders noting the increasing political stakes in states with significant Christian populations. Modi's participation in the CBCI event signifies an effort to bridge the gap and foster better relations between the Sangh Parivar and the Christian community.
