About 18,000 Undocumented Indians Face Deportation From US
As US President-elect Donald Trump is set to assume office next month, nearly 18,000 undocumented Indians face deportation, data from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported.
Over 17,940 Indians have been identified who face several legal hurdles. Many are embroiled in never-ending legal proceedings whose hearings are scheduled for later date. Over the period of three years, close to 90,000 Indians were arrested while attempting to cross the border illegally, stated ICE.
As per experts, lion’s share of these individuals belong to Punjab, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh.
Out of 208 nations, India ranks 13th on ICE’s list that mentions whereabouts about undocumented immigrants in the US. Honduras leads the pack with 261,000 undocumented individuals, followed by Guatemala with 253,000.
Categorising India as “uncooperative”, the federal agency has cited irregularities by Indian officials in verifying citizenship and issuing travel documents.
President-elect Donald Trump has come down heavily on illegal immigrants by proposing stricter policies. He confirmed using military forces to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. He stated, “We'll get National Guard, and we'll go as far as I'm allowed to go, according to the laws of our country.” Though The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits use of federal military personnel in matters pertaining to domestic civil law, Trump has proposed plans to involve military resources, including the National Guard to free the country from illegal immigrants.
