World shares mostly lower amid US holiday quiet

Tokyo: Shares were mostly lower in Europe and Asia on Tuesday after US markets were closed for the Memorial Day holiday.Germany’s DAX gained 0.3 per cent to 18,828.68 while the CAC 40 in Paris edged 0.1 per cent lower to 8,121.17. In Britain, the FTSE 100 shed 0.2 per cent to 8,303.25, reopening from a bank holiday on Monday. The future for the S&P 500 was up 0.2 per cent while that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged 0.1 per cent higher.

In Asian trading, Chinese markets rose and then fell after senior leaders of the ruling Communist Party met and affirmed Beijing’s determination to contain financial risks. The Shanghai Composite index dropped 0.5 per cent to 3,109.57.
