The nine-day Hindu festival of Navratri began on October 3 and will continue into the next week. While Navratri is observed multiple times throughout the year, the Sharada Navratri—celebrated between September and October—is the most prominent. As Navratri concludes with Dussehra, banks will be closed for the holiday. But when exactly does Dussehra fall this year—October 12 or October 13? And will the stock markets, BSE and NSE, remain open on either of these dates?

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, marks the grand culmination of the Navratri festival, symbolising the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana and the rescue of his wife, Sita. It is traditionally celebrated on the tenth day of Ashvina, the seventh month of the Hindu calendar, which typically falls in September or October. This day is a celebration of good triumphing over evil and is observed with much fervour across India.

Dashami Tithi is expected to begin at 10:58 AM on October 12, 2024, and end at 9:08 AM on October 13, 2024, meaning Dussehra will fall on October 12. Banks will be closed on both October 12 and 13 due to two reasons. October 12 is the second Saturday of the month, a regular monthly holiday, and Dussehra will also be observed on this day. Additionally, banks will remain closed on October 13 due to the Sunday holiday.

As for the stock market, the BSE and NSE will be closed on both days as well. While the stock market is usually closed on weekends, October 12 will also be observed as a holiday for Dussehra. Therefore, trading in equity, derivatives, and commodities on BSE and NSE will be unavailable on these dates.

In total, the stock market will observe nine holidays in October 2024, with 22 trading sessions.
