Hyderabad: TELANGANA government allocated Rs 1,000 crore funds for the expansion of Hyderabad metro rail project in 2021-22 budget.

Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) will soon start the works with the funds allocated for pending project of MGBS to Falaknuma, and second phase corridors of Rayadurg to Shamshabad airport; Lakdikapul to BHEL via Mehdipatnam, Gachibowli, and Kondapur; and, Nagole to LB Nagar route.

Rayadurg to Shamshabad airport corridor requires around Rs 6,000 crore which covers 31 km distance, which will be covered in 30 minutes. The airport corridor work is expected to start soon, as Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao and Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao have shown special interest in this route. The work on the other corridors as part of the second phase will be taken up subsequently.

HMR had completed Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the second phase corridors in 2018, but the State government didn't allocate any funds for the project in the past three years.

The pending route of the first phase between MGBS and Falaknuma requires around Rs 1,200 crore. L&T has dropped the project as the route was not viable, so the State government took up the project. This year's budget made provision for HMR to start the work but the funds sharing arrangement between the corridors is not yet known.
