Ather Energy expands R&D and testing capabilities with new facility ahead of IPO

Ather Energy, an electric two-wheeler maker preparing for its IPO, has unveiled its new research and development (R&D) and testing facility in Bengaluru. Spanning 38,692 sq. ft., the facility aims to enhance Ather’s capabilities in validating the durability and safety of its electric vehicles, systems, and components, including on-road endurance.
This new facility is equipped with labs for structural durability, battery testing, electrical reliability, and vehicle environment testing, according to the company’s statement. The company highlights that its rigorous testing process includes battery validation through thermal performance, water wading, drop tests, and vibration and thermal cycling. Ather’s battery packs undergo testing for real-world load conditions and extreme conditions, ensuring they meet IPX7 waterproof and AIS 156 standards.
Ather’s co-founder and CTO, Swapnil Jain, emphasized the importance of comprehensive testing for electric vehicles (EVs), given the relatively new nature of the technology. “Our products undergo extensive testing tailored to Indian riding conditions and extreme usage scenarios,” he said.
The new facility will also feature equipment for targeted testing of systems like suspension frames, enabling faster design optimization and early detection of issues, reducing costs in the process. With 46% of its workforce dedicated to R&D, Ather has invested approximately ₹238 crore (15% of its FY24 revenue) in advancing its research.
Ather currently operates three R&D facilities in Bengaluru, which support the design, development, and testing of its electric two-wheelers, charging infrastructure, and accessories. This expansion comes as Ather prepares for an IPO that includes a ₹3,100 crore equity issue and a 22 million equity share offer for sale by its promoters and investors.
Proceeds from the IPO will be used to fund capital expenditure for a new electric vehicle factory in Maharashtra, continued investment in R&D, marketing initiatives, and loan repayment.
Founded in 2013 by Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain, Ather Energy operates two manufacturing plants in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, and is set to open another in Bidkin, Maharashtra.
