History beckons former Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma when his team takes on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on March 27.
On Wednesday, Rohit will become the first player to play 200 matches for MI. The former skipper joined the MI bandwagon in 2011 and since then he has played 199 matches and has scored 5,084 for the franchise. He has also guided MI to five IPL titles and is a six-time IPL winner, with his first title coming in 2009, when he was a part of the now-defunct team Deccan Chargers.
Rohit will be the third player, after Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, to play 200 or more matches for a single franchise. Kohli has played 239 games for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), while Dhoni has appeared 221 times in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) colours.
The former Mumbai Indians captain is also on the cusp of another record. He has hit 488 sixes so far in T20 matches, and going by his current form, Rohit could soon achieve the feat of hitting 500 sixes in the shortest format of the game.
Mumbai Indians have gotten off to a losing start in the IPL 2024, losing their first match to Gujarat Titans by six runs. Just before the league commenced, MI announced a change in guard, with Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as the skipper of the franchise. The move did not go well with the majority of the cricketing fraternity, as Rohit, who is supposed to have an astute cricketing brain, has been one of the most successful captains in the league.
