Discovered in 2019 hanging in a French grandmother's kitchen, the 10-inch-by-8-inch artwork, auctioned for approximately $26.8 million, faced export restrictions by the French government, deeming it a "national treasure."
Rima Abdul Malak, the French minister of culture, and Laurence des Cars, president and director of the Louvre Museum, announced that the French government had acquired the painting from the auction winner. The masterpiece, along with another Cimabue creation titled "Maestà," will take center stage in a Louvre exhibit scheduled to open its doors in 2025.
