Yoon faces political crisis amid impeachment setback
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing his biggest challenge yet, despite narrowly avoiding impeachment. Following the failed motion, which saw members of his own party abstaining from voting, calls for his resignation have grown stronger, particularly after his controversial attempt to impose martial law.
Once seen as a resilient political figure, Yoon is now increasingly isolated, with personal scandals, internal party discord, and unrelenting opposition compounding his difficulties. His presidency, which began with a narrow victory in 2022, has been overshadowed by a series of challenges. The situation escalated on Tuesday when Yoon's attempt to impose martial law sparked public outrage and further distanced him from key figures within his party.
The impeachment motion, which failed on Saturday due to a boycott by members of Yoon's own party, did not end the controversy. Even some of his closest allies are now questioning his fitness to lead and urging him to step down. Meanwhile, the opposition has vowed to bring the issue back to the National Assembly, while Yoon's party has pledged to seek a more “orderly and responsible” solution.
Political analysts point to signs of "extreme rage" from Yoon during the martial law episode. A top spy agency report revealed that Yoon allegedly instructed aides to “grab them all and round them up” after a confrontation with parliamentarians.
On the domestic front, Yoon’s presidency has also been marred by scandals. The most prominent involves his wife, who faced accusations of accepting an expensive Christian Dior handbag as a gift, followed by allegations of stock price manipulation. While Yoon initially refused to take responsibility, he eventually issued an apology after his party suffered a crushing defeat in the April parliamentary elections. Despite calls for an investigation, prosecutors decided against charging his wife.
Despite the domestic turmoil, Yoon has had some success on the international stage, particularly in efforts to ease tensions with Japan and strengthen a trilateral security alliance with the U.S. and Japan. His personal charm, demonstrated by his impromptu performance of "American Pie" at a White House event, has earned him international praise.
Yoon’s rise to power stems from his background as a prosecutor. Born into an affluent family, he struggled with the bar exam before passing it on his ninth attempt. His political career began in 2016 when he led the investigation into President Park Geun-hye, which ultimately resulted in Park’s impeachment. Yoon’s role in that investigation, along with his tenure as prosecutor general, catapulted him into the national spotlight, helping him secure the presidency in 2022 with a narrow victory over opposition leader Lee Jae-myung.
However, his presidency has been plagued by early missteps, including the controversial relocation of the presidential office from the Blue House, which many criticized as being based on feng shui superstitions. His failure to hold officials accountable for the Itaewon crowd disaster, which claimed 159 lives, has also damaged his reputation. Critics argue that Yoon’s loyalty to “yes men” within his inner circle, some of whom were involved in the decisions that led to the current crisis, has further undermined his leadership.
The political storm surrounding Yoon is unlikely to die down anytime soon. As support from his allies continues to erode, the opposition remains determined to push for his impeachment. Yoon's political future now hinges on balancing the remaining support from his loyalists with the growing pressure for his resignation.
