The UK government has announced an extension of the e-Visa transition period until March 2025 to ensure a smooth shift from physical to digital immigration documents. This extension allows airlines and other carriers to accept biometric residence permits (BRPs) and EU Settlement Scheme biometric residence cards (BRCs) expiring on or after 31 December 2024 as valid proof of permission to travel to the UK.

In a recent statement, the government highlighted the benefits of eVisas as a crucial part of a digital, streamlined border and immigration system. By replacing physical documents with digital proof of immigration status, eVisas aim to enhance user experience and bolster the security and efficiency of the immigration system.

With the impending expiration of most BRPs and BRCs on 31 December 2024, the government has decided to provisionally extend the acceptance of these documents until 31 March 2025. This measure is intended to ease the transition for travelers while maintaining usual immigration checks and requirements. Travelers whose immigration status has expired will still be subject to refusal of entry.

Seema Malhotra MP, Minister for Migration and Citizenship, expressed her encouragement at seeing over 3.1 million people accessing their eVisas, benefiting from their convenience and security. She emphasized the availability of extensive guidance and support for those yet to switch to eVisas and affirmed the government's commitment to a seamless transition.

Malhotra also noted the increased flexibility for carriers in accepting expired documents to facilitate international travel without compromising border security. The government remains dedicated to making the transition to eVisas straightforward for all status holders, including improving processes for legacy paper document holders and enhancing support services for vulnerable individuals.

The Home Office has implemented changes to streamline the process, allowing airlines to automatically check travel permissions. The government urges those yet to switch to eVisas to do so before year-end to take advantage of the benefits, including enhanced convenience and security.

Parents or guardians of children with BRPs are advised to take action on their child's behalf. Individuals with indefinite leave to remain using ink stamps or vignettes in passports can continue using their documents for travel but are encouraged to apply for a No Time Limit eVisa to enjoy the benefits of the digital system.

An eVisa offers greater security as it cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with, allowing visa holders to instantly and securely prove their immigration rights. Switching to an eVisa will not affect current rights.
