Trump criticizes Russia's role in Syria, blames Ukraine war for loss of interest
US President-elect Donald Trump has sharply criticized Russia for abandoning Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, claiming that the conflict in Ukraine diverted Moscow's attention and interest from Syria. Trump stated that Assad had fled his country, and Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, was no longer willing to protect him.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, "Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, was not interested in protecting him anymore." He added, "Russia had no reason to be in Syria in the first place. They lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, a war that never should have happened and could drag on indefinitely."
Trump also remarked that both Russia and Iran, key supporters of Assad, are currently in a weakened position—Russia due to the ongoing Ukraine war and a struggling economy, and Iran because of its conflict with Israel.
During his recent trip to Paris, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the reopening ceremony of Notre-Dame Cathedral, Trump reiterated his stance on the Ukraine conflict. He called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations, noting that both Russia and Ukraine have suffered significant casualties. Trump emphasized that Zelenskyy is seeking a resolution, stating, "He would like to make a deal and stop the madness."
Trump concluded by calling on Putin to act and suggested that China could play a role in facilitating peace. "The World is waiting!" he added.
