A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake rocked the western Caribbean on Saturday evening, prompting a tsunami advisory for the Cayman Islands. The tremor, recorded at 6:30 PM local time, struck about 130 miles south-southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands, at a depth of approximately six miles, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
Tsunami Threat for the Cayman Islands and Cuba
Following the earthquake, the Cayman Islands Hazard Management Agency issued an urgent tsunami advisory, warning residents along the coastline to move inland or seek higher ground. The agency cautioned that tsunami waves, although sometimes appearing small—measuring around 1.5 feet—can carry immense power and stretch 50-60 miles across the ocean.
Similarly, Cuba was placed under a tsunami threat, with experts predicting waves between 3 to 10 feet high. The US Tsunami Warning System closely monitored the situation.
Tsunami Advisory Lifted for Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands
Initially, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands were placed under a tsunami advisory, urging residents to stay away from coastal waters. Puerto Rico’s Governor, Jenniffer González Colón, advised residents—particularly along the island’s southern and western shores—to leave the water immediately as a precautionary measure. However, the advisory was later lifted, with officials confirming no significant tsunami threat.
USGS Revises Earthquake’s Magnitude
The USGS initially reported the earthquake as an 8.0 magnitude event but later revised its assessment to 7.6. The agency reassured that the quake struck a relatively remote location, minimizing the impact on populated areas. Experts noted that the region is no stranger to seismic activity, having experienced 10 earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater over the past century. A similar event in January 2018, measuring 7.5, caused minor damage and triggered a small tsunami.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging residents in affected areas to remain cautious and follow official safety advisories.
