Massive federal layoffs: Nearly 10,000 workers fired as Donald Trump, Elon Musk step up assault on US agencies

More than 9,500 employees who manage everything from the US federal government lands to veterans' services were dismissed on Friday in line with US president Donald Trump and his advisor Elon Musk's plan to reduce bureaucracy in America dramatically.

The drive to terminate employees has thus far seen employees working in those in the Departments of Interior, Energy, Veteran Affairs, Agriculture and Health and Human Services being targeted, with a lot of them, but not always employees on probation in their first year of employment and with less protections for employment.

Certain agencies have been shut down in some cases, such as the watchdog independent of known as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which also impacts those on fixed-term contracts.

The tax collection agency, the Internal Revenue Service, is planning to Trump Musk lay off drive thousands of employees next month, Reuters stated, in a report quoting 2 sources familiar with the issue. It could be an attempt to cut back on resources prior to the deadline of April 15 for Americans to submit their income tax returns.

Trump, Musk offer buyout option

As per the White House, the recent cuts are in addition to the 75,000 employees who signed the offer of Trump and Musk in their buyout choice to quit voluntarily. This amounts to approximately 3 percent from the 2.3 million employed in the civilian sector.

President Trump has declared his administration is deeply in debt, and that a lot of money has been wasted due to fraud and waste.
