A new generation will begin forming starting from January 1, 2025—Generation Beta. Comprising children born between 2025 and 2039, this generation is expected to become a major part of the global population. By 2035, Generation Beta will contribute roughly 16% of the world’s population and will be around when the world enters the 22nd century.

Why is it named Generation ‘BETA’?

The naming of Generation Beta follows the pattern set by Generation Alpha, the group born between 2010 and 2024. Mark McCrindle, a social researcher known for popularizing generational names, explained that Generation Beta will succeed Gen Alpha, Gen Z (born 1996–2010), and Millennials (born 1981–1996). These generational names reflect the societal and technological shifts shaping each age.

What Will Generation Beta Experience?

Generation Beta will grow up in a world where technology is seamlessly integrated into every aspect of life. Unlike their predecessors, who witnessed the rise of smart technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), Beta babies will experience AI and automation embedded in their daily lives. Whether in education, healthcare, workplaces, or entertainment, these technologies will be a fundamental part of their world.

McCrindle predicts, "They will live in an era where AI and automation are not only available but are a core part of life." Autonomous transportation, wearable health technologies, and immersive virtual environments will be common.

The Challenges They Will Face

Despite technological advances, Generation Beta will inherit a world grappling with significant challenges, including climate change, urbanization, and shifting global population dynamics. Their core values are likely to include adaptability, sustainability, and collaboration. While Generation Alpha has already shown interest in sustainability, it will be up to Generation Beta to ensure environmental consciousness remains a priority for the long term.

The rapid development of social media, a defining feature of previous generations, may evolve into a new format for Generation Beta, one that emphasizes digital interaction but also requires a stronger focus on real-world connections. However, forming meaningful personal relationships could prove more challenging as virtual forms of social contact take precedence.

Additionally, while Generation Beta will not experience the COVID-19 pandemic firsthand, they will grow up in its aftermath. They will learn about the pandemic as a historical event rather than a defining moment in their lives.

A New Era for Humanity

As Generation Beta emerges, they will navigate the rapid technological advancements, environmental challenges, and shifting societal norms of their time. They will play a crucial role in shaping the future, redefining social interactions, and addressing sustainability and technological integration. Although much of their future remains uncertain, Generation Beta’s potential to shape tomorrow’s world is undeniable.

While generational labels offer valuable insights into common experiences, experts caution against oversimplifying individual experiences based on birth year. According to Jason Dorsey, a generational researcher, while these labels provide helpful context, they are not definitive categories. Understanding a group’s experiences requires looking beyond just the label and considering broader factors such as race and class.

As we stand on the brink of 2025, the arrival of Generation Beta signals the start of an exciting new era, filled with immense potential and challenges.
