On January 13, 2025, a powerful earthquake measuring 6.9 in magnitude struck southwestern Japan, with its epicenter located in Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Following the earthquake, tsunami warnings were issued for Miyazaki and the nearby Kochi Prefecture, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

The quake occurred at 9:19 PM local time, and authorities have been closely monitoring the situation as the full extent of the damage remains unclear. Initial tsunami forecasts predicted waves of up to 1 meter (3.2 feet), but within 30 minutes, the tsunami reached Miyazaki's coastline, where it was measured at just 20 centimeters (0.7 feet), much lower than expected.

Residents in low-lying areas, especially in Kochi, were urged to evacuate as a precaution. The earthquake struck at a depth of around 30 kilometers (18.6 miles), and tremors were felt across a broad region of Kyushu. Despite the earthquake's intensity, no significant damage or casualties have been reported.

NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, showed live footage of normal traffic flow and illuminated streets in affected cities, indicating that power remained intact. Additionally, monitoring systems at nearby nuclear plants have reported no irregularities or safety concerns.

Situated along the "Ring of Fire," Japan is prone to frequent seismic activity due to its location in a geologically active zone surrounding the Pacific Ocean.
