Jagmeet Singh urges Trudeau’s resignation amid political turmoil and Trump tariff threat
Canada’s New Democratic Party leader, Jagmeet Singh, has joined the growing demand for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation following the unexpected exit of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland. Singh criticized Trudeau's handling of the high cost of living and the looming threat of tariffs from US President-elect Donald Trump.
Singh addressed the nation, saying, “Today, I am calling on Justin Trudeau to resign. The Liberal Party is in disarray while Canadians need a Prime Minister who will stand up for them.”

Deputy PM’s Exit Deepens Political Crisis
Singh’s demand for Trudeau to step down came just hours after Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland's resignation, following a clash with Trudeau over how to handle Trump’s tariff threats. This internal conflict has spurred about a third of the Liberal Party’s MPs to call for a leadership change, escalating the political crisis.
As of Monday evening, Trudeau had not announced his decision regarding his position as Prime Minister. Nearly 60 of the 153 Liberal MPs in the House of Commons have joined the call for his resignation. Freeland's resignation as Finance Minister marks a significant dissent within Trudeau’s cabinet, threatening his leadership.
Trudeau is trailing Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre by 20 points in the polls, with Poilievre repeatedly attempting to trigger a snap election since September.
In her resignation letter, Freeland cited a “grave challenge" facing Canada, referencing Trump’s proposed tariffs. She mentioned that her disagreement with Trudeau on the country’s future path led to her departure.
