Is Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey the Creator of Bitcoin? New Theory Leaves Internet in Shock

A fresh theory is catching the attention of netizens, claiming that Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter (Now X) and Square (Block), could be none other than Satoshi Nakamoto – the creator of Bitcoin. The claim is backed by Sean Murray, the editor-in-chief of deBanked where he highlighted a series of questionable coincidences, cryptographic links, and timeline overlaps.
Jack Dorsey’s early life
During Dorsey's university years, he took a great interest in cryptography, Murray highlighted. Back then, Dorsey received cryptographic newsletters and pursued a university course focusing on encryption technology. He also penned an autobiography in 2003 detailing his experiences with hacking and cryptographic projects by working on it at 4:00 am.
Once Dorsey reiterated ideas of financial independence and alternative systems of trade. He also wrote about creating a barter network, which is similar to Bitcoin’s original vision.
Interesting Coincidences and its connection with Bitcoin
During the period between September 2007 and January 2009, Dorsey’s Bio simply read, “sailor.” Notably, Bitcoin’s code contains a phrase widely known among sailors: “Never go to sea with two chronometers—take one or three.”
On January 10, 2009, Satoshi mistakenly logged into an IRC chat, revealing a California-based IP address. Interestingly, Dorsey was also in California at that time.
Murray has detailed several other mysterious coincidences:
1. The first-ever Bitcoin transaction took place on Dorsey’s mother’s birthday.
2. Satoshi joined the Bitcoin forum on Dorsey’s own birthday.
3. The last block mined by Bitcoin’s creator fell on Dorsey’s father’s birthday.
4. Bitcoin addresses generated by Satoshi contained patterns that seem to reference Dorsey’s San Francisco address: Jack Dorsey, 2 Mint Plaza.
Satoshi’s Disappearance and Dorsey’s Rise
In 2010, Satoshi’s post on Bitcoin forum advised against donating cryptocurrency to Wikileaks. Later on Satoshi disappeared from the public eye.
In March 2011, Dorsey became Twitter’s Executive Chairman while also leading Square. One month later, Satoshi sent his final message. Murray believes this is no coincidence. He noted, “When Satoshi told Martti Malmi that he was genuinely busy with work, Dorsey was fully engaged in launching Square.”
Doubts
However, not everyone subscribes to this theory. Analysts at BitMEX Research argue that it’s difficult to find out when exactly Satoshi stopped mining Bitcoin. They challenged by stating, “How do you know Satoshi's last mined block, when the Patoshi pattern gradually degrades over time?”
In 2020, during an interview with Lex Fridman, Dorsey was asked directly if he was Satoshi. He responded, “I would not admit it even if I were.” Murray saw this as a stark contrast to others who have been suspected previously.
Dorsey’s Cryptic Remarks
In July 2024, he posted on the decentralised platform Nostr: “I often imagine Satoshi sitting somewhere, laughing at all of this.”
Dorsey has also thanked one of Bitcoin’s earliest contributors Hal Finney for his work. On this, Murray said, “The belief that Satoshi never wanted to be found is something others have made up about him. Satoshi chose pseudonymity, not anonymity.”
Bitcoin: A Mystery
Previously, HBO’s documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, showed that Canadian programmer Peter Todd was Satoshi. However, Todd denied these allegations and went on to become a fugitive due to safety concerns.
