A catastrophic earthquake shook Myanmar on Friday, unleashing a wave of destruction and tragedy. Two powerful quakes, registering magnitudes of 7.7 and 6.4, struck just after 12:50 pm local time, triggering chaos and fear across the region.

The tremors wreaked havoc on buildings, bridges, and essential infrastructure, leaving a trail of collapsed homes in various towns and villages. The sheer intensity of the quakes was felt far beyond Myanmar’s borders, with a high-rise in Chatuchak district, Bangkok—nearly 900 kilometers away—caving in and claiming the lives of three workers. Rescue efforts are ongoing, as many remain trapped in the debris.

In Myanmar, the devastation was heartbreaking. Three lives were lost when a mosque partially collapsed, with the iconic Ava Bridge, a 90-year-old structure, crumbling into the Irrawaddy River due to the quake’s ferocious power. The epicenter was located near Sagaing, but the impacts were felt far and wide, forcing people from their homes and sending waves spilling from poolside terraces in panic.

Halt due to earthquake

In the wake of a powerful earthquake that shook Bangkok, the city of angles experienced an unprecedented day of disruption. Buildings were swiftly evacuated, and businesses closed their doors as residents grappled with the aftermath. Thankfully, there have been no immediate reports of casualties in Thailand's vibrant capital.

In a decisive response, the government implemented a lockdown, halting metro services, closing airports, and shuttering subways. The Stock Exchange of Thailand followed suit, temporarily suspending all trading activities amidst the chaos.

The international community has rallied in support of Thailand, with many expressing deep concern over the situation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India echoed these sentiments, offering heartfelt assistance to help the nation navigate this challenging time.

"Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, we asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand," PM Modi tweeted.
