The sequence of events leading to the tragedy has been detailed by South Korea’s transport ministry and fire authorities.

The flight, designated as Flight 7C2216, was landing at Muan International Airport early Sunday morning. Here’s a timeline of its last minutes:

8:54 a.m. – The air traffic control at Muan Airport cleared the aircraft for an approach and landing using runway 01, oriented at 10 degrees east of north.

8:57 a.m. – Air traffic control alerted the pilot to bird activity near the airport.

8:59 a.m. – The pilot experienced a bird strike, made a mayday emergency call, and started a go-around. The pilot instead requested to land on runway 19.

9:00 a.m. – Flight 7C2216 was given clearance to land on runway 19, approaching from the other end of the single runway.

9:02 a.m. – The aircraft landed on the last 1,200 meters of the 2,800-meter runway.

9:02:34 a.m. – Air traffic control activated airport crash bell, notifying rescue crews.

9:03 a.m. – The aircraft overran the runway and collided with an embankment.

9:10 a.m. – The Transport Ministry was alerted to the accident.

Despite a rapid response by airport rescue teams, almost everyone on board the passenger jet crash was killed. The first survivor to be pulled from the wreckage was taken to a temporary medical facility at 9:23 a.m. By 9:50 a.m., a second survivor had been found inside the tail section.

Muan International Airport was closed at 9:38 a.m. as the authorities initiated investigations into the cause of the disaster. Officials said they believe the bird strike may have contributed to the crash.
