Explained: Things You Should Know About Investigations Faced By South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol

Followed by declaration of martial law, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, several cabinet ministers, military commanders along with several police officials face criminal investigations. Yoon also faces trial in the country's Constitutional court that will decide the fate of his presidential tenure. Several military officials are being probed on charges of insurrection and abuse of power, among others.

What are the Charges?

As of now, Yoon has not been accused of the crime and has also not been served with an arrest warrant yet. Former Defence minister Kim Yong-hyun has also been arrested and indicted for alleged insurrection and abuse of power.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo faced impeachment by the main opposition Democratic Party on Friday. He is being questioned for his alleged role in failure to avert Yoon’s martial law. Leaders including Yoon, Kim, Lee, the national and Seoul police chiefs and more than 10 military commanders have been banned from leaving the country. Previously, Yoon failed to respond to multiple summons by investigative authorities for questioning.

Who leads the investigation?

To examine this case, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office has created a special investigation bureau. This development comes after it probed the 2016 corruption scandal, which involved then-President Park Geun-hye.

Park Se-hyun said that 50 prosecutors and investigators, and about a dozen military prosecutors have been deployed to look into this matter.
