Elon Musk takes a jab at Trudeau over US-Canada merger idea
Elon Musk fired back at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after he rejected the idea of a merger between Canada and the United States. The controversy started when US President-elect Donald Trump proposed that Canada could become the 51st state. Musk, a known supporter of Trump, had previously endorsed the merger idea.
In a post on social media platform X, which Musk owns, Trudeau dismissed the idea, stating, “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States. Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partner.”
However, Musk, who has been a close ally of Trump, took to the platform to respond sharply: "Girl, you’re not the governor of Canada anymore, so doesn’t matter what you say."
This comment comes amid Trump’s recent remarks, where he referred to Trudeau as the “Governor of the great state of Canada” and reiterated that Canada should join the US as its 51st state. Trump, though, clarified that he would not use military force to annex Canada but instead advocated for the idea through economic influence. He also pointed out the strategic benefits, stating, "We basically protect Canada."
Trudeau's remark came shortly after he announced his decision to resign as Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party, which is currently in power. His likely successor, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, also weighed in, firmly declaring, "Canada will never be the 51st state. Period. We are a great and independent country."
Despite the backlash, Trump remains unmoved by the criticisms. He recently posted an image of the American flag superimposed over Canada, further fueling the debate. Additionally, Trump has expressed plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
