Marvel’s latest installment, Captain America: Brave New World, attempts to wade into the murky waters of global politics—quite literally, setting its premise in the Indian Ocean, where the discovery of a rare element, adamantium (yes, Wolverine’s signature metal), triggers a geopolitical power struggle.

Among those at the negotiation table is a notably slender Indian Prime Minister, clad in kurta-pyjama and jacket, alongside Japan’s leader. Presiding over this high-stakes meeting is none other than the U.S. President, on a mission to “Make the World Great Again.” But in true Marvel fashion, things take a turn for the chaotic with the arrival of Red Hulk.

The film benefits from the presence of Harrison Ford, who takes on the role of President Ross. Even with hints of a dark past, Ford’s gruff charm makes him a compelling addition to the cast. Whether his character truly redeems himself or not is almost irrelevant—his sheer presence is enough to keep viewers engaged.

A Familiar Battle, A New Captain

When President Ross calls upon Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), now wielding the Captain America mantle, he reluctantly accepts. Partnered with Joaquin (Danny Ramirez), the aspiring new Falcon, and retired super-soldier Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly, delivering a strong performance), Wilson is drawn into a web of political intrigue as much as physical combat.

The film doesn’t hold back on action, featuring high-altitude fights, ground battles, and laboratory showdowns with volatile substances. Washington’s cherry blossoms provide a striking backdrop, while the White House—predictably—takes a beating.

Mackie vs. Evans – A Tough Comparison

Anthony Mackie delivers a competent performance, but the film struggles to shake the inevitable comparison to Chris Evans. Evans’ Steve Rogers carried an effortless star power that elevated even weaker scripts, whereas Mackie, though solid, lacks that same magnetic presence.

The film does try to justify the transition, with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) making a brief appearance to underline the contrast: “Rogers gave people something to believe in; you give them something to aspire to.” It’s a noble sentiment, but does it truly resonate? That’s up to the audience.

Final Verdict

Despite its political overtones and attempts at deeper storytelling, Captain America: Brave New World doesn’t quite live up to its name. It’s neither particularly brave nor groundbreaking. Marvel’s 35th MCU outing offers the usual action-packed spectacle, but whether it leaves a lasting impact is debatable.

Rating: ⭐⭐½ (2.5/5)
