Carter, who passes all former presidents by virtue of his longevity, died in his home at Plains, Georgia, on Sunday afternoon.

Biden regarded him as "a man of principle, faith, and humility," while Trump said all Americans owe Carter "a debt of gratitude."

On January 9, Biden declared, there will be a national day of mourning, urging Americans to visit houses of worship to "pay homage" to the late president.

Flags will hang half-mast at all public and military buildings for a 30-day period that includes the inauguration of president-elect Trump.

On Truth Social account, Trump posted: "It was at a critical time for our country that Jimmy faced challenges as president, and he used every ounce of power he had to improve the lives of all Americans.

" World leaders paid tribute to Carter as well.

King Charles III said: "His dedication and humility served as an example to many, and I recall with fondness his visit to this country in 1977".

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Carter "was a leader who ruled during the period when Ukraine was not independent, yet his heart stood firm with us in our ongoing freedom struggle".

According to the French President, Emmanuel Macron, he has been "an unwavering champion of rights for the most marginalized and a tireless crusader for peace."

Carter's record in office would be associated with very serious problems he encountered in trying to address acute economic difficulties and a number of foreign policy challenges, including what developed into the Iran hostage crisis, culminating in the deaths of eight Americans.

"Carter's son Chip announced his passing, saying that his dad was 'a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love'".

Former President Bill Clinton and his wife, an ex-Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, also underscored Carter's faith

"He lived to serve others, even to the very end," they said in a statement.
