A passenger plane operated by Azerbaijan Airlines caught fire after crashing near Aktau city in Kazakhstan, according to the country's Emergencies Ministry.
The aircraft was carrying 67 passengers and five crew members and was en route from Baku to Grozny in Russia's Chechnya. However, due to foggy conditions in Grozny, the flight had to be re-routed.
Kazakh authorities reported that 12 people survived, marking this as one of the deadliest crashes involving Azerbaijan Airlines.
Azerbaijan Airlines confirmed that the Embraer 190 aircraft, operating flight J2-8243 on the Baku-Grozny route, made an emergency landing roughly 3 Km from Aktau city. The airline promised to keep the public updated with more information regarding the incident.
According to the aircraft's inbuilt Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data, it took off from Baku at 03:55 UTC and flew to Grozny.
