Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia promised to launch 4G and 5G services in BSNL and MTNL "as soon as possible" and said the state-run telcos' turnaround efforts are being monitored on a daily basis, not monthly or weekly. The minister also stated that the government stands behind MTNL's Sovereign Guarantee Bonds and that there will be no defaults, even as its operations are transferred to BSNL.
In his words,
“What we have said is very clear that MTNL’s operations will be transferred to BSNL. The monetisation of assets will take place to pay off the liabilities. In the interim of monetisation of assets and some bonds getting due, the sovereign guarantee bonds stand good. The Government of India stands behind those bonds, and there will be no default.”
Scindia, speaking on the fringes of the curtain-raiser event for the India Mobile Congress, urged the public to have national pride and patience while they waited for the upgrade, explaining that it is being built on indigenous technologies rather than imported ones.
The complex technologies needed to build the 4G and 5G telecom infrastructure that will be implemented on BSNL and MTNL networks have been developed by a consortium consisting of Public Sector Organisation C-DOT, Tata-run Tejas, and TCS. Scindia stated that India is now aiming to be a leader in the development of 6G technologies after swiftly catching up to and experiencing the growth of 5G and that India is currently focusing on promoting the development of 5G apps and solutions for deployment in rural areas.
