Visakhapatnam: RASHTRIYA Ispat Nigam Limited, which has been proposed by the Centre for strategic sale, is gearing up to commission the forged wheel plant (FWP) at Lalganj (Rae Bareli) in Uttar Pradesh at a cost of about Rs 1,683 crore.

All the construction activities like installation and testing of the plant and machinery at the site have been completed.

The hot trial of the first forged wheel from the forging line has been successfully completed. The unit is ready for commissioning and commercial operation is expected to commence within the next few weeks.

As an import substitute for forged wheels required by Indian Railways, RINL took up the construction of the project under Atmarnirbhar Bharat Abhiyan (self-reliant India campaign).

"Producing and supplying the growing demand for Railways is the right step to achieve self sufficiency by reducing dependence on external supplies and saving cost on imports," an RINL official told Bizz Buzz.

As per the off-take agreement between RINL and Railways, the total assured quantity of 55,000 units will be supplied in the first year and thereby scale up production by providing 70,000 units in the next year and 80,000 wheels per year up to 2043 or for further period on renewal of agreements.

Continuous cast rounds (CCRs) of 330-480 mm diameter, the input material, will be sourced from the new caster in Steel Melting Shop (SMS-2) of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) installed under 7.3 million tonne expansion project.

The five pillars of Atmanirbhar Bharat viz. economy, infrastructure, technology-driven systems, vibrant demography and demand are very well strengthened with the establishment of this forged wheel pant, according to the RINL management.

Salient features of forged wheel plant include a capacity to produce 1,00,000 wheels/year with a provision for expansion up to 2,00,000 wheels. The project cost of the plant is approximately Rs 1683 crore.

Project management and consultancy is being offered by MECON. Design, engineering, manufacture and supply of machineries, and commissioning of plant is done by a consortium led by SMS Group of Germany. Fuel gas (propane/LPG) will be supplied by Indian Oil Corporation Limited.
