The neuro-ophthalmology team at LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) here organised an interactive patient interactive forum to raise awareness about Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH).
“Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) is becoming increasingly prevalent, particularly among women of childbearing age and individuals with obesity. In response to the rising incidence of IIH within our community, we are organising this patient education session to raise awareness about the disease, its symptoms, diagnosis, and management. Additionally, we aim to establish a patient discussion group for individuals with IIH. Also coming forward to support this effort are some of the patients of IIH, and IIH Warriors India group,” Dr Virender Sachdeva, neuro-ophthalmologist, LVPEI said.
He said this platform will enable them to share their experiences and concerns with fellow patients and experts, fostering a supportive and informative community. He added, “The neurological condition affects both the eyes and the brain. One common symptom of IIH is persistent headaches. Unfortunately, since headaches are a common occurrence, patients often delay seeking medical help for them. Hence, the condition is frequently misdiagnosed or diagnosed at a later stage. If left untreated, IIH can lead to vision impairment, irreversible vision loss and related complications. Thus, we encourage individuals experiencing chronic headaches to undergo an evaluation for IIH by consulting either a neurologist or a neuro-ophthalmologist.”
