Instagram is testing a new feature that allows users to privately express discontent with comments on the platform. Announced by Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, the feature aims to enhance the overall conversation experience. Mosseri shared the update on Threads, explaining that the dislike button offers a way to signal that a comment is not well-received, without causing public negativity.

The new button appears next to comments, allowing users to indicate their disagreement or discomfort with a remark. Unlike traditional dislike buttons, this feature does not display a public dislike count, and the person who made the comment will not be notified if their remark is disliked. Mosseri emphasized that the goal is to foster a positive, friendly space for conversations on the platform.

“This is a test, there is no dislike count, nor will anyone know if you tap the button,” Mosseri clarified. He also highlighted that, if successful, Instagram may incorporate this private feedback into its comment-ranking system, potentially pushing disliked comments lower in the thread to minimize their visibility.

Though still in the testing phase, the feature aims to reduce negative interactions and improve the quality of discussions on Instagram. “Our hope is that this might help make comments more friendly on Instagram,” Mosseri concluded. The feature’s success in creating a more positive atmosphere remains to be seen, but it has the potential to serve as a valuable moderation tool.
