Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is gearing up for its annual airspace closure ahead of Republic Day celebrations on January 26. This routine measure, essential for ensuring the safety of Republic Day flypast rehearsals and dignitaries, is being compounded by the city’s notorious mid-winter fog, which has already caused widespread travel disruptions.

Planned Airspace Closures

From January 19 to January 26, 2025, the airport will restrict flight operations daily from 10:20 AM to 12:45 PM, as per NOTAM A0053/25 issued on January 7. The closure, spanning 145 minutes, allows for secure Republic Day flypast rehearsals and the main event. Travelers are advised to expect potential delays and rescheduled flights during this period.

Impact on Flights

Approximately 1,336 domestic and international flights are projected to be affected by the closures, including those to Toronto, Washington, Tashkent, Kathmandu, and Colombo. While outright cancellations are not anticipated, travelers should prepare for altered takeoff and landing schedules.

Booked Flights: Ensure airlines have your updated contact details for real-time notifications.

New Bookings: Avoid scheduling flights near the closure window to minimize disruption risks.

Dense Fog Adds to Challenges

Beyond the closures, dense fog has already led to significant disruptions, with 200–300 flight delays reported daily. Reduced visibility has hampered takeoffs and landings, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings:

Orange Alert (Wednesday): Dense to very dense fog expected.

Yellow Alert (Thursday & Friday): Persistent fog conditions anticipated.

How to Stay Prepared

Monitor weather updates and flight schedules closely.

Stay in touch with your airline for real-time changes.

Allocate extra time for potential delays when planning your travel itinerary.

Whether traveling domestically or internationally, staying informed and prepared will help navigate the turbulence caused by these closures and challenging weather conditions.
