Ajith Kumar’s Tamil action thriller Vidaamuyarchi, directed by Magizh Thirumeni, is preparing for its digital release after an underwhelming theatrical run. The film, initially anticipated to perform strongly at the box office, witnessed a decline in collections after an encouraging start.
Produced by Lyca Productions and inspired by the 1997 Hollywood thriller Breakdown, Vidaamuyarchi generated considerable excitement before its release. Despite the initial momentum, the film’s earnings gradually slowed, leading to modest box office numbers.
With theatrical collections falling short of expectations, the makers have confirmed that Vidaamuyarchi will premiere on Netflix on March 28. This move is expected to attract audiences who missed its theatrical release, providing the film an opportunity to gain traction in the digital space.
Along with its streaming debut, the film has secured a television deal with Sun TV, which has acquired its satellite rights. According to reports, Vidaamuyarchi is scheduled for a television premiere on April 14, aligning with Tamil New Year celebrations. The festival release is anticipated to enhance viewership and engagement.
The film features an ensemble cast, including Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Regina Cassandra, Arav, and Ramya Subramanian. Vidaamuyarchi follows the story of Arjun (Ajith Kumar) and Kayal (Trisha Krishnan), a couple whose journey takes a dangerous turn when Kayal is kidnapped. Arjun is thrust into a race against time to rescue her, uncovering hidden threats along the way. Supporting characters played by Arjun Sarja, Regina Cassandra, and Arav add complexity to the narrative.
Despite high expectations, Vidaamuyarchi experienced a sharp decline in collections within the first few days. Early reports indicated that the film grossed approximately Rs 35 crore in its opening weekend. However, ticket sales slowed considerably thereafter.
The film’s performance in cinemas did not match the success of Ajith Kumar’s previous blockbusters. Some factors contributing to the decline included mixed audience reviews and competition from other releases. However, the upcoming digital release may offer a fresh opportunity for Vidaamuyarchi to reach a broader audience.
