Sony PlayStation Plus members will receive an automatic five-day service extension following a global outage that disrupted PlayStation Network (PSN) services for approximately 18 hours between Friday and Saturday.

Sony confirmed on Sunday that network services had been fully restored but did not disclose the cause of the outage. “Network services have fully recovered from an operational issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience,” the company posted on X.

What Happened?

Thousands of gamers worldwide faced disruptions, including difficulties with account sign-ins, online gaming, and accessing the PlayStation Store. Frustrated users took to social media to share memes and complaints about being locked out of their favourite games.

According to Downdetector, the outage affected approximately 7,939 users in the U.S. and 7,336 in the U.K.

How Does This Compare to Past PlayStation Outages?

While this outage caused frustration among users, it was significantly shorter than past PSN disruptions:

2011: A major security breach compromised the personal data of 77 million PlayStation users, leading to a 23-day network shutdown and regulatory investigations.

2014: A cyberattack forced PSN offline for several days during the holiday season.

Despite the latest disruption, Sony's decision to offer a service extension is a goodwill gesture to affected users.
