The Malayalam crime thriller Rekhachitram has emerged as the year’s highest-grossing film, achieving an impressive box office collection. Following its successful theatrical run, the movie is now preparing for its digital release. SonyLIV has secured the streaming rights, and the film is scheduled to premiere on the platform in March.
The much-anticipated digital release of Rekhachitram has seen delays, contrary to earlier speculation of a February debut. Filmmakers have opted for an extended theatrical window, deciding on a March 14 release date for the OTT premiere. The movie will be available in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
Directed by Joshin Chacko, the mystery crime thriller features Asif Ali and Anashwara Rajan in lead roles. Additionally, Malayalam superstar Mammootty makes a guest appearance. The movie originally hit theaters on January 9 and quickly garnered critical and commercial acclaim.
With a production budget of approximately six crores, Rekhachitram surpassed expectations, collecting over Rs 55 crores at the box office. The film’s gripping narrative and strong performances played a key role in its widespread popularity. Asif Ali and Anashwara Rajan’s portrayals received positive reviews, further solidifying its success in the thriller genre.
The story follows Vivek Gopinath, a police officer reassigned to a remote forest region due to disciplinary actions. On his first day at the new post, he encounters a perplexing case—an individual takes his own life after broadcasting a confession about a murder committed four decades ago. The investigation leads to deeper secrets, unraveling connections to actress Rekha, a longtime fan of Mammootty, who mysteriously vanished. How Vivek pieces together the mystery forms the crux of the film’s storyline.
Prior to Rekhachitram, Asif Ali starred in Kishkinda Kandam, another thriller that performed exceptionally well, grossing over Rs 77 crores. With the OTT release of Rekhachitram imminent, industry experts predict that the film will continue its strong performance on digital platforms, reaching a wider audience.
