Actor Vicky Kaushal’s upcoming historical film, Chhaava, which portrays the life of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has encountered controversy ahead of its February release. A scene in the recently released trailer has drawn criticism from the Maratha organization Sambhaji Brigade.

The group has objected to a dance sequence featuring Kaushal and co-star Rashmika Mandanna, who play Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai, respectively. According to the organization, the depiction undermines the dignity of Sambhaji Maharaj, and they have demanded the removal of the scene from the film.

In a statement, Sambhaji Brigade expressed its appreciation for the effort to create a Hindi film based on Sambhaji Maharaj but highlighted that the dance sequence disrespects the revered Maratha king. The group has urged the filmmakers to address their concerns before the movie’s release. Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Maddock Films, Chhaava is set against the backdrop of the Maratha Empire. The narrative highlights the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, beginning with his coronation in 1681 and chronicling his resistance against the Mughal Empire.

The cast includes Akshaye Khanna as Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, alongside Vineet Kumar Singh, Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, Neil Bhoopalam, Santosh Juvekar, and Pradeep Rawat in significant roles. Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman has provided the music for the film.

The promotional campaign for Chhaava gained momentum earlier this week with the release of its trailer and character posters, sparking excitement among fans. Initially scheduled for release in December 2024, the film was postponed to avoid clashing with Allu Arjun’s highly anticipated Pushpa 2: The Rule.

The controversy surrounding the dance sequence has prompted discussions on social media, with many debating the balance between creative liberties and historical authenticity in films based on historical figures. While some fans have shown support for the filmmakers, others have urged sensitivity toward cultural and historical sentiments.

The makers of Chhaava have not yet issued a statement regarding the objections.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is celebrated for his leadership and resistance against Mughal expansion during the late 17th century. His reign is marked by efforts to protect the Maratha Empire and uphold its sovereignty, making him a revered figure in Indian history.

With Chhaava, Vicky Kaushal takes on the challenge of portraying this iconic historical figure, while Rashmika Mandanna steps into the role of Maharani Yesubai. Chhaava is set to release nationwide on February 16, 2025.
