The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted its closure report in the inquiry into actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, ruling out any suspicion of foul play. The report, filed before a special court in Mumbai, awaits judicial review to determine if the findings will be accepted or if further investigation will be required.
Senior Advocate Satish Maneshinde, representing individuals involved in the case, commented on the CBI’s decision. He stated, “The CBI’s investigation spanning over four and a half years has now concluded with a closure report. This extensive probe has meticulously examined all aspects before reaching a decision. The spread of misinformation through digital and social media was unnecessary. During the pandemic, with limited events unfolding nationwide, television and online discussions fueled baseless theories. Several individuals faced unwarranted scrutiny by the media and investigative agencies. Moving forward, it is imperative that such incidents do not repeat. Media organizations must evaluate their role in such matters.”
He also highlighted the challenges faced by actress Rhea Chakraborty, stating, “Rhea endured undue hardship, including 27 days of judicial custody before securing bail. Her family demonstrated remarkable resilience despite the adversities. Legal assistance was sought through a close acquaintance, a former classmate from my Sainik School days. Throughout this period, my legal team and Rhea’s family faced continuous threats. However, our commitment to professional responsibilities remained firm.”
Addressing speculation regarding his legal fees, Maneshinde clarified, “I am honored to have defended a Fauji Family on a pro bono basis. Speculations about my remuneration are unfounded. I extend my gratitude to media professionals who supported Rhea in her pursuit of justice. Our judiciary remains robust, ensuring that those seeking justice can rely on the system.”
Rhea Chakraborty was raised in Bengaluru. Her father, Lt. Col. Indrajit Chakraborty, served in the Indian Army. A graduate of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) Pune, he completed his medical studies in 1988 and began his military career in 1989 at INHS Asvini, Mumbai. During this period, he met Sandhya Rao, a JJ School of Arts graduate working with a Mumbai-based publication.
Over the next decade, Lt. Col. Chakraborty served in multiple military hospitals while pursuing a master’s degree in gynecology. Despite his qualifications, he prioritized family over an extensive medical career. Colleagues from the armed forces recall his dedication to his wife, Sandhya, and their children, Rhea and Showik.
His decision to retire early after nearly 25 years of service stemmed from his desire to support Rhea’s aspirations in the entertainment industry. Post-retirement, he served as Medical Superintendent at a Karnataka-based hospital for three years before moving to Mumbai, where he assumed an administrative role at Kohinoor Hospital.
On June 14, 2020, Sushant Singh Rajput was found deceased at his Bandra residence. His father, K.K. Singh, filed a police complaint in Bihar, alleging financial exploitation and abetment to suicide. The case was subsequently transferred to the CBI.
Forensic analysis by AIIMS ruled out external injury or poisoning. Testimonies from individuals close to Rajput, including Rhea Chakraborty, were recorded. Rhea and her brother, Showik Chakraborty, were later arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in a separate drug-related case and subsequently granted bail.
The Bandra magistrate court has scheduled the next hearing for April 8. If the court endorses the CBI’s findings, the case will be officially closed. While the investigation concludes, some continue to question the circumstances surrounding Rajput’s death. Several Bollywood personalities, including Pooja Bhatt, have voiced support for Rhea Chakraborty as the case reaches its final legal phase.
