Actor Kim Soo Hyun is under scrutiny following reports of a past relationship with the late actress Kim Sae Ron, who died by suicide on February 16. Allegations surfaced that Soo Hyun dated Sae Ron when she was underage, sparking controversy and backlash online.
According to the YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute, Soo Hyun and Sae Ron were in a relationship for six years, though it remained unconfirmed. The claims suggest their relationship began when she was 17, while he was 30. The recent revelations have led to growing calls for a boycott of the actor’s projects and endorsements.
A letter, reportedly written by Soo Hyun in 2018 during his military service, was presented by Sae Ron’s aunt. The note, addressed to Sae Ron, includes affectionate language and references a personal nickname, “Saero-Nero.” Excerpts from the letter express his desire to share meaningful experiences with her, despite difficulties in meeting. A translated portion reads: “Even if it’s hard to see your face, I still want to tell you how I feel.”
The allegations have triggered public criticism, with many questioning Soo Hyun’s professional future. Social media users have called for brands and production houses to reconsider their association with him. Images from his military service resurfaced online, including a 2019 postcard where he allegedly wrote, “I love you, Sae Ron.”
Sae Ron was found dead at her residence at age 24. Authorities ruled her death a suicide. The actress, known for her early rise in the entertainment industry, had faced legal troubles in 2022 after a DUI incident, which led to widespread backlash. Her funeral took place on February 19.
