Suriya’s ambitious pan-India project Kanguva, directed by Siva, has turned into a surprising box office disappointment. Despite opening with ₹24 crore on its first day, the film's earnings plummeted. Its first-weekend collection of ₹29.6 crore rapidly dwindled during the weekdays, with day 5 earning ₹3.15 crore, day 6 ₹3.25 crore, and day 7 a mere ₹2.4 crore. By Thursday, the total earnings stood at ₹64.40 crore, raising concerns over its fate.

Adding to its woes, Kanguva recorded only 12.91% occupancy for Tamil shows on Thursday, signaling a lukewarm audience response. Negative reviews surfaced soon after the premiere, pointing out issues like overpowering audio and an underwhelming screenplay.

Makers’ Attempts to Revive Kanguva

In an effort to salvage the film, the makers reduced the audio levels, re-censored the movie, and trimmed some initial scenes to improve pacing. The updated version now runs for 2 hours and 22 minutes.

Kanguva follows the journey of a tribal warrior battling Roman invaders in 1070 and connects to a modern-day bounty hunter on a perilous mission. Suriya showcases his versatility in dual roles as Kanguva and Francis Theodore.
