Kanguva Box Office Collection Day 5: Suriya’s Film Struggles to Maintain Momentum; Amaran Benefits
Suriya’s highly anticipated pan-India film Kanguva has faced a significant setback at the domestic box office after a promising start. The fantasy action drama, which opened with a decent Rs 24 crore on its release day, failed to hold its ground over the following days. On Day 5, the film made just Rs 3.15 crore, reflecting a sharp decline in its box office performance.
Despite its strong opening, Kanguva saw a considerable drop in collections, with a 61% fall on its first Friday, earning only Rs 9.5 crore. The film’s earnings recovered slightly on Saturday with Rs 9.85 crore, followed by Rs 10.25 crore on Sunday. However, by the end of its first five days, the film had grossed Rs 56.75 crore in India, according to film trade portal Sacnilk.
Made on a budget of approximately Rs 350 crore, Kanguva has been receiving negative reviews, with criticism directed at its loud background score, weak script, and unconvincing dialogue delivery. These factors seem to have contributed to its underperformance at the box office.
Interestingly, the failure of Kanguva has benefitted Amaran, the Sivakartikeyan and Sai Pallavi-starrer. Amaran had a strong run at the box office, grossing Rs 114.85 crore in its first week and an additional Rs 57.25 crore in its second week. The film continued to perform well, earning Rs 3.6 crore on its third Friday, Rs 6.15 crore on Saturday, Rs 7.75 crore on Sunday, and Rs 2.5 crore on Monday. By Day 19, Amaran had accumulated Rs 192.10 crore at the Indian box office.
Meanwhile, Kanguva is set to release on Amazon Prime Video around Pongal, with the streaming platform securing the OTT rights for approximately Rs 100 crore. The film will be available in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, English, Spanish, and French.
Directed by Siva, Kanguva is set in two timelines—1070 and 2024—where a tribal prince's struggle to save his people in the past is mysteriously linked to a bounty hunter’s mission in the present. In addition to Suriya, the film features Bobby Deol, Disha Patani, Redin Kingsley, Yogi Babu, and Natarajan Subramaniam in pivotal roles. The film released in theaters worldwide on November 14.
