Suriya's pan-India film Kanguva saw a significant decline in its India box office collections on Friday. After a promising opening day, the film experienced a sharp drop, impacted by negative word of mouth.
On its opening day, Kanguva made Rs 24 crore, but by Friday, the collections fell to around Rs 9 crore, bringing its total India box office tally to Rs 33 crore, according to Sacnilk.
Not only did the film struggle in India, but its global performance was underwhelming as well, grossing Rs 40 crore worldwide.
The film, which opened to largely negative reviews, was criticised for its weak script and screenplay, which failed to engage viewers. Audiences also complained about the excessively loud sound design, with Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty taking to Instagram to express disappointment over the "loudness war" in modern films. Pookutty urged the industry to address the issue, stating that such sound practices hinder a film's repeat value.
Additionally, some viewers were disappointed by the limited screen presence of Bobby Deol's character. Despite these setbacks, Suriya's performance as Kanguva and Francis Theodore was one of the few redeeming qualities of the film.
Directed by Siva, Kanguva is a Tamil fantasy action film spanning two timelines – 1070 and 2024. Set against a backdrop of a tribal prince’s struggle to save his people, the film explores his mysterious link to a bounty hunter’s mission in the future. Despite a high budget of Rs 350 crore, Kanguva has received a lukewarm reception, with an IMDb rating of 5.2/10.
Along with Suriya, the film stars Bobby Deol, Yogi Babu, Disha Patani, and others, with Karthi making dual cameos. Released worldwide in standard, 3D, and IMAX formats on November 14, the film is struggling to find its footing at the box office.
