Kanguva Box Office Collection Day 1: Suriya's Latest Film Sees Strong Opening Despite Mixed Reviews
Suriya’s much-anticipated film Kanguva has made a remarkable debut at the box office, despite receiving a mix of reviews. On its opening day, the film raked in an impressive Rs 22 crore at the domestic box office, signaling strong viewer interest despite some critical setbacks.
The film, which released on Thursday, had a varied reception from audiences. While Suriya’s performance as both Kanguva and Francis Theodore was praised by many, others felt that the script and screenplay fell short of expectations. The film also faced some criticism for its loud pitch, with background scores and sound design described as overwhelming by some viewers.
India Today’s review highlighted the film’s high decibel levels, with the loud music by Devi Sri Prasad and intense performances from the cast, including Bobby Deol and Redin Kingsley, leaving some viewers yearning for a quieter moment. "Kanguva is one of the loudest films you could watch in theatres," the review noted.
In terms of theatrical performance, Kanguva had a solid turnout across multiple regions. The Tamil 2D shows saw an occupancy of 37.25%, while the 3D versions performed slightly better at 49.89%. Other language versions, including Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada, also showed a good mix of occupancy, with the Hindi 2D and Telugu 3D formats seeing higher engagement at 58.12% and 39.28%, respectively.
However, Kanguva also faced a challenge when it was leaked online soon after its theatrical release. Multiple torrent platforms, including Tamilrockerz and Filmyzilla, began offering downloads of the film in various resolutions, which could impact its box office performance in the coming days.
Directed by Siva, Kanguva weaves together two timelines – one set in 1070, where Suriya plays a tribal prince fighting against the Romans, and another in 2024, where he portrays a bounty hunter on a dangerous mission. The film’s ensemble cast includes Bobby Deol, Disha Patani, Yogi Babu, Natarajan Subramaniam, and Redin Kingsley, among others.
Despite the film’s mixed critical reception, its solid opening numbers indicate that Suriya’s star power and the film’s grand scale have drawn audiences to theatres. As Kanguva continues to screen in cinemas across the country, it will be interesting to see if word-of-mouth will support its box office performance over the next few days.
