Amid Pushpa 2 - The Rule’s box office dominance, the new pre-Christmas 2024 Indian releases have gotten off to a strong start. Director Vetrimaaran's Viduthalai Part 2, Upendra's UI, and the Malayalam film Marco, among others, hit screens on December 20.
Viduthalai Part 2 emerged as the biggest opener among the new Indian releases, nearly doubling the opening numbers of its predecessor. Early estimates suggest the crime thriller grossed around 8 crores, with approximately 6.50 crores coming from Tamil Nadu on its opening day.
Upendra, the Kannada star and director, saw his dystopian sci-fi action film UI surpass expectations, delivering the biggest opening of 2024 for a Kannada film. The movie earned an estimated 7.50-8 crores, which includes about 80 lakh from the Telugu version, on its first day.
The Malayalam action thriller Marco, starring Unni Mukundan, also performed beyond expectations. Known as the most violent Mollywood film ever, it grossed an estimated 5 crores on its opening day.
The early word of mouth for all three films has been excellent, setting them up for a strong holiday week. Additionally, Disney's Mufasa - The Lion King, a big Hollywood release featuring the voices of Shah Rukh Khan (Hindi) and Mahesh Babu (Telugu), performed well in India on its opening day, earning an estimated 9-10 crores in net collections across all versions. Early reactions to Mufasa are positive, making it a likely favourite among family audiences this festive season.
