The prestigious Padma Bhushan, awarded for "distinguished service of high order," has been conferred this year to four legendary icons of South Indian cinema—Ajith, Nandamuri Balakrishna, Shobana, and Anant Nag. Recognized for their remarkable contributions to the arts, these film stars continue to inspire millions with their exceptional talent and dedication.

Announced on January 25, a day before Republic Day, the Padma Awards honor individuals across various fields, including arts, social work, science, and public service. As one of India's highest civilian awards, the Padma Bhushan ranks just below the Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan.

This year, seven individuals received the Padma Vibhushan for "exceptional and distinguished service," 19 were honored with the Padma Bhushan, and 113 received the Padma Shri for their distinguished contributions, bringing the total to 139 awardees. Among them, the arts category had the highest representation, with 51 awardees.

Ajith, known for his dynamic performances and versatility; Nandamuri Balakrishna, a veteran actor and politician celebrated for his larger-than-life roles; Shobana, an acclaimed actress and Bharatanatyam dancer; and Anant Nag, a revered actor in Kannada cinema, have each left an indelible mark on Indian cinema and beyond.

Their recognition underscores the immense cultural and artistic influence of South Indian cinema on the nation.
