Rumours about Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan's divorce have circulated for some time, yet the couple remains silent on the matter while netizens speculate and search for validation of these claims. Amidst the chatter, a notable moment arises from their 2009 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where Aishwarya delivered a witty response to Oprah's comments about divorce in Indian culture. She firmly stated that the couple doesn’t even entertain such thoughts.
During the episode, Oprah showcased footage from their wedding outside Prateeksha, the Bachchan family residence in Juhu, Mumbai, highlighting the massive crowd that gathered to catch a glimpse of the newlyweds. She emphasised the grandeur of Indian weddings, which often last several days. Abhishek elaborated that these weddings typically span a week or more, filled with various rituals, culminating in the couple taking seven vows around a ceremonial fire.
Surprised by the elaborate nature of the ceremony, Oprah remarked, “It would be hard to get divorced after that.” Aishwarya quickly responded, asserting, “We don’t even try and entertain the thought.”
Oprah also probed about the experience of living with family after marriage. As Aishwarya awaited Abhishek’s response, he playfully turned the question back to Oprah, asking her how living with family works for her. His witty retort drew laughter from the audience, and Aishwarya looked on, impressed by her husband’s cleverness. Eventually, she explained that living with family feels entirely normal for them.
Abhishek shared that his father, Amitabh Bachchan, lived with his parents, and he continues that tradition by residing with his own parents. Oprah inquired whether they all shared meals or kept to separate parts of the house. Abhishek explained that his mother has a rule: if they are in the city, the family must share at least one meal together each day.
Since their marriage in 2007, Aishwarya and Abhishek have appeared together in films like Guru, Raavan, and Umrao Jaan, showcasing their on-screen chemistry. They welcomed their daughter, Aaradhya, in 2011, further strengthening their family bond.
On the professional front, Aishwarya Rai last starred in Ponniyin Selvan: II, directed by Mani Ratnam, released in 2023. Abhishek Bachchan was last seen in the film Ghoomer and has an exciting lineup ahead, including Be Happy, Housefull 5, and Shoojit Sircar’s I Want To Talk. Additionally, he will star in King, directed by Sujoy Ghosh, alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Suhana Khan.
