Hyderabad: MIT Bengaluru, a leading education institution has unveiled the Center of Excellence in Autonomous Mobility, inaugurated at by AICTE Chairman, Dr. TG Sitharam. This initiative is a collaboration between MIT Bengaluru, Decibel Lab and Virya AI (Maini Group), aims to position India at the forefront of autonomous mobility technologies and innovation.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of an autonomous six-seater electric buggy, developed in collaboration with Virya AI. The buggy represents a leap in smart transportation, showcasing the potential of autonomous technology to revolutionize the way we travel by offering safer, more sustainable, and efficient solutions.
Equipped with cutting-edge technologies like LIDAR sensors, radar, high-resolution cameras, and advanced simulation software, the Center is designed to foster research and development in autonomous mobility. It provides a collaborative space for students, researchers, and industry professionals to develop solutions that address real-world challenges in transportation while ensuring safety and reliability in autonomous systems.
Prof Madhu Veeraraghavan, Pro Vice-Chancellor, MAHE, expressed the significance of the initiative: “The Center of Excellence in Autonomous Mobility reflects MAHE’s commitment to cutting-edge research and innovation. It enables us to develop transformative solutions in transportation, contributing to sustainable and safe mobility systems. We are proud of our faculty and partners for making this vision a reality.”
Dr. Iven Jose, Director, MIT Bengaluru, also shared his thoughts on the occasion: “Today marks a key milestone for MIT Bengaluru. The inauguration of the Center is a fusion of advanced technology, academic leadership, and industry expertise. It provides a platform for innovation that will not only tackle the challenges of autonomous mobility but also serve as a hub for collaboration between academia and industry.”
The Center’s capabilities extend beyond autonomous vehicles to areas such as sensor design, algorithm development, and autonomous cybersecurity. It will also focus on autonomous assistive technology, a sector that holds immense promise for the future of transportation.
Dr. Ujjwal Verma, Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), and Dr. Mahipal Bukya, Assistant Director of IQAC, have led the establishment of the Center. It will serve as a research and training hub, enabling students and professionals to advance their knowledge and skills in autonomous vehicle technologies. The Center will also facilitate industry collaborations aimed at upskilling the workforce in emerging technologies.
The Center’s efforts are aligned with the global need for solutions to urban congestion, traffic safety, and sustainability. By focusing on innovative technologies, the Center is poised to develop autonomous systems that address these pressing challenges while fostering the next generation of engineers and researchers.
