In a significant development aimed at addressing critical issues in water resource management and urban flooding, IIT Roorkee and the Central Water Commission (CWC) have signed two Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

These agreements were formalised during detailed discussions between Sh. Kushvinder Vohra, Chairman of CWC & Ex-Officio Secretary to the Government of India, and officials from IIT Roorkee.

The MoUs cover various areas, including irrigation efficiency assessment, water accounting studies, cropped area mapping under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY), urban flood forecasting and risk management, and urban flood inundation and hazard mapping.

In the coming five years, both organisations will work closely together to carry out research and execute projects in these specific areas.

One of the key initiatives under this collaboration is the introduction of a certificate program for water auditors, aiming to enhance expertise in water management practices.

Additionally, efforts will be made to evaluate the impact of climate change on water resources, aligning with governmental initiatives to improve water management and agricultural productivity.

The partnership underscores the use of advanced technologies such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to develop precise flood susceptibility maps for urban areas.

These efforts seek to establish robust mechanisms for urban flood resilience and contribute to sustainable water resource management.

The collaboration between IIT Roorkee and CWC signifies a concerted effort to address pressing challenges in water resource management and urban flooding, leveraging the expertise and resources of both institutions.
