DYPIU students to distribute 3D printed hands and arms to the needy children for free

Pune, October 28 In what can be termed as its unique initiative , under the guidance of its Vice Chancellor, Prof Prabhat Ranjan, DY Patil International University (DYPIU) has taken a humanitarian step to launch an initiative to help children who are unable to use their hands and fingers due to war, natural disaster, illness or accidents. Through this initiative, DYPIU envisions making and delivering free 3D printed hands and arms to children who are in need. The focus will be to help the children in underserved communities who have little to no access to medical care. This initiative is a part of a larger scheme of thought fuelled by an online global community of digital humanitarian volunteers named e-NABLE.
At DYPIU, this project has been launched under the supervision of Dr. Surabhi Sonam, Head of the Department of Bioengineering. 5 students of 2nd year, BTech (Bioengineering) program (Akankasha Jagdish Khandge, Prathamesh Vijay Khadke, Vaishnavi Balasaheb Said, Pritam Sitaram Wanve, Shrushti Chavan) have successfully made the first 3D-printed
hand to start the initiative. e-NABLE volunteers are spread all over the world who are using their 3-D printers to make free and low-cost prosthetic upper limb devices
for children and adults in need.
Vice Chancellor of DYPIU, Prof Prabhat Ranjan said that there are 160 educational institutions which have been named after Padmashree Dr DY Patil who is fondly known as 'Dada' among his followers.
There will be single entrance test for all the DY Patil educational institutions from next academic year, he added.
Prof Ranjan made an announcement on the occasion that beginning next year, Padmashree Dr DY Patil Shiksha Samvardhan Puraskar will be given in six different categories on an annual basis.
