The White House has once again raised concerns over India's high tariffs on American goods, particularly on alcohol and agricultural products. During a press briefing on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted the issue while discussing trade relations with Canada.

"Canada has been imposing extremely high tariffs on American products for decades, affecting our workers and businesses," Leavitt said. She pointed out that American cheese and butter face nearly a 300% tariff in Canada. Expanding on global trade imbalances, she also turned her attention to India.

"You look at India, there's a 150% tariff on American alcohol. Do you think that's helping Kentucky bourbon get into India? Absolutely not," she remarked. "On top of that, India imposes a 100% tariff on agricultural products from the U.S. Meanwhile, Japan has a 700% tariff on rice."

Leavitt displayed a chart that showcased tariffs from various countries, with India's tariff rates prominently highlighted.

President Donald Trump has been vocal about India's trade policies in recent days. On Friday, he stated that India had agreed to reduce its tariffs significantly, reiterating his long-standing claim that India imposes "massive tariffs" on American goods.

"President Trump believes in reciprocity. It’s time we have a leader who prioritizes American businesses and workers," Leavitt emphasized. "All he’s asking for is fair and balanced trade practices. Unfortunately, Canada—and now India—have not treated the U.S. fairly for many years."

Trade negotiations between India and the U.S. remain a key focus, with both countries working toward resolving tariff-related issues and improving market access. Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is expected to visit the U.S. later this month with a revised tariff proposal, signaling potential progress in trade talks.
