UPI payments continue to fail with banking servers experiencing outages
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platforms and various banking services are confronting server outages across India. Consequently, the users are experiencing failures with UPI payments or digital payments, reportedly causing widespread inconvenience, with UPI-enabled apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and BHIM, etc.
Displeased with the inconvenience, many users highlighted the failed payments issue on the social media platforms through some banking apps like those of HDFC Bank, State Bank of India (SBI), Kotak Mahindra, Bank of Maharashtra and Bank of Baroda, and others, according to outage detection site Downdetector.
The problems don’t end here. Several users even reported facing issues while making transactions through platforms such as PhonePe, Google Pay, BHIM, etc.
Although there have been several user reports linked to the outage issue, neither the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) nor the banks have acknowledged the ongoing crisis. Also, no information has come up with regards to the root cause of server outage or the exact reasons behind the UPI users’ failed transactions through their respective banking accounts.
Especially, a report in November 2023 stated that the government was still reflecting theenactment of minimum time constrictions for transactions beyond a specific amount in the earlier interaction between two individuals. Based on inputs from government sources as reported by The Indian Express, the suggested plan was supposed to involve instituting a likely four-hour timeframe for the first transactions between two users for digitized transactions, especially those above Rs 2,000.
